Thanksgiving side dishes

Everyone has food-related traditions they observe during the holidays, and we all know that changing the menu, at least in most households, is not popular. So, we won't make any suggestions about unusual ways to cook that turkey, duck, or ham. Instead, we will offer some ideas for side dishes to complement the main event. Each of these recipes can either be completed, or prepped ahead of time and baked or reheated prior to serving. We have made the mushroom soup a day prior to serving with wonderful results. The potato gratin from Fine Cooking includes some tips to allow the cook to have all the pieces ready to assemble. The roasted onions are best when made ahead, and left at room temperature until needed. Happy Thanksgiving from our house to yours!
