Tailgate Market Now Open
We hope you won't miss the opportunity to shop for fresh, locally grown produce every Wednesday this month. The Tailgate Market in Tryon is open on Wednesday afternoons in July from 5 to 7 pm in the Tryon Depot parking area. We were there just as the first Wednesday market opened, and found all kinds of great things brought in by Polk County growers. There were beautiful sunflowers, corn, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, and onions, just to mention a few of the items available. Having lived in areas that had mid-week markets, we love the convenience of buying freshly picked produce on Saturdays, and again during the week. Support of this effort will enable the organizers to determine if there is sufficient interest to warrant markets beyond this month. There are many of us who applaud this effort, and hope to see it continue throughout the growing season.
In addition to some great baby-back ribs with Oriental flavors, this week's column includes a recipe for a wonderful summer salad from the August 2002 issue of Gourmet magazine. The combination of fresh corn, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, and basil makes a refreshing, colorful salad. For dessert, we highly recommend either the lemon popsicles, or the sorbet. If you don't have popsicle molds (ours were purchased from Williams Sonoma), the sorbet is a great option.
