Stew, soup or chowder?

As we all know, the distinctions between stew, soup, and chowder are fine ones. And then we add chili to the mix, and the ingredients for that dish alone can start a small controversy. Generally, it is accepted that the ingredients of a stew are cut into larger pieces than a those of a soup and retain more of their individual flavors; a stew may have thicker liquid than a soup and a stew is more likely to be eaten as a main course than as a starter, unlike soup. Well, except in cases where the soup is hearty enough to take a starring role. Chili, loosely defined, is a spicy stew-like dish. The essential ingredients are chili peppers and meat. Variations, either geographic or by personal preference may include tomatoes, onions, beans, and other ingredients. But as we all know, the definition of chili can vary from household to household.

However you define any of the above, the weather is perfect for soups, stews, and chili, so we've included one of each today.
