It's the time of year to enjoy fruits
While we were enjoying breakfast with visiting family recently, we realized that it's such a great time of year to enjoy fruit. Breakfast that day included strawberries, blueberries, and cantaloupe, and we knew that peaches would be available within days. In deference to our guests, we did not fix one of our own favorites, a baked rhubarb compote based on an Alice Waters recipe, but rhubarb is also readily available now. Ms. Waters serves the compote with crème fraiche, but we generally enjoy it over yogurt as a breakfast option.
Everyone has a favorite blueberry muffin recipe, and this is one we have made for many years. Another way to enjoy blueberries is a recipe from Eating Well for blueberries with lemon cream, and the strawberry recipe is a quick way to enjoy some of the local crop. While somewhat unusual, the cantaloupe salad is surprisingly refreshing, and very quick to assemble. Over the last few years, it has become a favorite summer lunch dish at our house. Sopresseta (also spelled soppressata or sopprassata) is an Italian dry-cured salami that we usually find at Whole Foods, or Fresh Market.
